Aris’ slide down the Greek Basket League standings continued on Saturday night following a 73-64 derby defeat against AEK at OAKA.

Following their elimination from the FIBA Basketball Champions League midweek, Aris were unable to rebound on the domestic scene with a poor second quarter performance the source of Aris’ problems on the night.

Michalis Tsairelis led Aris with 18 points on the night, while Ivan Maras was the only other Aris player to finish the night with double-digits in scoring.

Vassilis Kavvadas led AEK scorers with 12 points on the night, while another former Aris player, Panagiotis Vassilopoulos, notched 7 points and 10 rebounds in his first meeting since leaving Aris for AEK last month.

AEK were trailing by five after the first quarter, but a dominant second frame in which the Athenian club went on a 26-11 run saw AEK open up a lead they wouldn’t relinquish in the second half.

The win sees AEK climb into a three-way tie for third place, though rivals Olympiacos do have a game in hand. Aris, meanwhile, are now winless in their last four Basket League outings and remain just two points above the relegation zone.

Both sides return to European action midweek with Aris looking to clinch a spot in the FIBA Europe Cup when Oostende visit Thessaloniki, while AEK will hope to clinch a berth in the FIBA Champions League Round of 16 with a win over medi Bayreuth.
