Arsenal set to sign Greece youngster Konstantinos Mavropanos
PAS Giannina’s Konstantinos Mavropanos is set to make a surprise move to Arsenal in a deal rumored to close at 2.3 million Euros.
The 20-year old defender, who debuted with PAS Giannina at the age of 18, is regarded as one of the best defenders to emerge in Greece in the past 10 years. He has had a great start to the 2017/18 season with 16 league and cup appearances (3 goals) with PAS Giannina. His talents have not go unnoticed as the league champions, Olympiacos, expressed heavy interest in the youngster along with Atalanta and Werder Bremen before the start of the winter transfer window.
However, late Tuesday night reports from England stated Arsenal were close to signing the player and these reports were confirmed by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on Wednesday in a post game interview. “Yes, we have reached a deal with Mavropanos and we will own his rights, however he is not ready to play at Arsenal and will be given on loan.”
Arsenal will purchase the player from PAS Giannina for 2.3 million Euros in an extraordinary deal and amount of money for a team of PAS Giannina’s caliber. Arsenal will hold the player’s rights and he will be loaned out for the rest of the season. A likely destination is Werder Bremen, who expressed interest in the player this winter, where he will look to develop his gameplay before joining Arsenal this summer.
Mavropanos completed the necessary medical tests on Wednesday and will put pen to paper on a 5-year deal on Thursday. The official move is expected to be announced by Arsenal on Thursday.
