Athens Derby Highlights Greek Cup Draw
An Athenian Derby and a reunion for Panagiotis Giannakis are the main storylines out of Monday’s draw for the Greek Cup semi-final
Defending Champions Panathinaikos will face city rivals AEK in the semi-finals of the Greek Basketball Cup, while Olympiacos are set to face former coach Panagiotis Giannakis and Aris following the results of Monday’s draw.
Panathinaikos’ quest for a repeat as titleholders will be tested against AEK in another installment of the Athens Derby as the Trifylli look for their seventh straight Greek Cup crown.
AEK, on the other hand, will be aiming for their first Final in 16 years as the Enosi look to improve on their haul of two titles.
Although AEK are officially marked as hosts for the encounter, the familiar confines of OAKA might rule out home court advantage as the both sides continue to the share the venue.
In the other tie, Aris will host Olympiacos as the Thessaloniki outfit looks to qualify for their first Final since 2014. Stuck on 8 titles in the competition, Aris will be hoping that Giannakis can steer the side to their first Greek Cup since the 2004 edition of the competition.
Olympiacos, who have one more Greek Cup to their name than Aris (Olympiacos 9, Aris 8), are still favorites to progress to the showpiece but haven’t done so since the 2013 installment.
Both matches are scheduled for November 5, with the winner of each one-game play-off qualifying for the Final in Heraklion on February 17.
