Atromitos allow Apollon to snag a point
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 1
|Atromitos||1 - 1||Apollon Smyrnis|
|Kevrakidis 47'||Elbaz 87'|
Atromitos dominated play in their opening SuperLeague fixture against Apollon Smyrnis, however their wasted chances proved costly as a last equaliser from Elbaz saw the two teams play to a 1-1 draw. Kivrakidis gave the hosts the lead in the 47th minute.
In the first half, there was only one team on the pitch and that was Atromitos.The hosts dominated the play, but could not keep their composure in front of goal and the two teams went into the break goalless. The best chance of the half fell to Kivrakidis, whose strike rattled the crossbar and during the same play, Duada failed to put the ball into an open net from Umbides’ cross.
However, Atromitos wasted no time in the second half to get on the scoreboard as a powerful, low strike from Kivrakidis gave the hosts the lead two minutes after the restart. As the match went on, Apollon began to balance out the play and the visitors manages to find an equaliser four minutes before the end. Just minutes after coming on, substitute Elbaz found the back of the net with a long distanced free kick, salvaging a point for the Superleague’s newly promoted side.
The visitors, who will be fighting to avoid the drop this season, will be content with a point from a difficult road fixture while Atromitos, who have hopes of a top-5 finish, will look back on their chances to avoid a similar scenario in their upcoming matches.
