Following the 1:0 first leg win in Tripoli, Atromitos held the upper hand before hosting Asteras in the Greek capital. However, Asteras had a promising chance to level the aggregate score just five minutes into the match. Michalis Manias found himself clear of the Atromitos defence, but he could only shoot directly into Nikola Mirkovic’s grateful grasp.
The visitors were made to pay for that missed opportunity. On 29 minutes, Atromitos put themselves in the driving seat with their first goal on the night. Aristotelis Karasalidis rose highest at the far left post, heading Dimitris Giannoulis’ floating free-kick beyond the goalkeeper. Amr Warda almost doubled Atromitos’ advantage late in the first half, seeing a wonderful dinked effort clip the crossbar.
Asteras’ faint hopes of a dramatic comeback were virtually ended after 56 minutes, as Ukrainian defender Evgen Selin was shown a second yellow card. Atromitos saw the match out with minimal fuss, sealing their place in the quarter-finals with a 2:0 aggregate victory.
