Atromitos satisfied, AEK note fatigue
Emotions were running high in Peristeri, as Atromitos Athens held AEK to an intense 1:1 draw at home in the Super League.
Sergio Araujo’s clever goal gave AEK a second half lead in the Greek capital, but Egyptian midfielder Amr Warda saved an important point for Atromitos with a beautiful strike beyond the flailing dive of Panagiotis Tsintotas.
Following the final whistle, Atromitos head coach Damir Canadi felt that a draw was a fair result between the two teams: “I think it’s a fair draw, both teams were organised and played an intense game,” stated the 47-year old Austrian. “The match was full of emotions, AEK were favourites today. In the second half, we cheaply gave away possession and allowed AEK to score. Marko Livaja and Amr Warda are great players who made the difference in this match, they created today’s goals.”
AEK boss Manolo Jimenez was more frustrated with the 1:1 tie: “We were aiming for victory, so a draw is negative,” said Jimenez. “What struck me was that Atromitos celebrated this draw like they had won the championship. We’re creating good chances against strong teams, but we are not taking advantage of them. When you play games constantly, you start to feel fatigue. Now, we have to prepare for AEL.”
Dimitris Chatziisaias, an Atromitos defender, gave his opinions after the battle in Peristeri. “It was a tough game, AEK are protecting an unbeaten run. We gave 100%, and eventually we got our reward. Marko Livaja is a very good player, I had to work hard to stop him. Damir Canadi is a great coach who wants us to play attractive football.”
Enosis midfielder Lazaros Christodoulopoulos noted the team’s tiredness. “Without trying to make excuses, our fatigue had a role to play. Usually, we try to set the tempo in matches, but our legs were heavy today. We’re sad to be out of the Europa League, but we are having a special season. We were disappointed after the match in Kyiv, however this unbeaten streak is giving us added motivation and we will now focus on the next match.”
