Olympiacos tasted defeat for the first time in their EuroLeague campaign as Barcelona handed the Piraeus giants a 73-51 loss at the Palau Blaugrana on Friday night.
Kevin Seraphin scored 13 points to lead Barcelona to just their second win of their campaign – the only other victory coming against Olympiacos’ arch-rivals Panathinaikos.
Still without inspirational playmaker Vassilis Spanoulis, Olympiacos’ offensive production was further limited by Barcelona’s league-best defense. Ioannis Papapetrou finished as Olympiacos’ leading scorer with 11 points, but the Greek international was the only Olympiacos to hit double digits in scoring
Despite a tight first quarter and close contest the rest of the way, a 24-10 run in the fourth quarter would put the game well out of reach as Olympiacos struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the final frame.
Olympiacos’ 51 points on the night represents the worst ever points production in the EuroLeague for the club; a feat that matches their woeful shooting night from four years ago against Emporio Armani Milano which also featured a 51-point night.
Turnovers were certainly a problem for Olympiacos as the Erythrolefki committed 21 turnovers compared to just 13 from the Barcelona.
The loss sees Olympiacos fall to 4-1 on the season, joining Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow, and Khimki Moscow Region atop the EuroLeague standings. A weak points differential at just plus 12, however, has the Erythrolefki slight behind the likes of Real Madrid (+52) and CSKA Moscow (+35).
Olympiacos return to domestic action this weekend as they face Aris in the Greek Cup semi-finals, before returning to EuroLeague duty to face Panathinaikos in the all-Greek affair at the Peace and Friendship Stadium.
