A dramatic night in Spain saw Panathinaikos succumb to defeat in heartbreaking fashion as a last-ditch effort from Rodrigue Beaubois clinched an 85-84 win for Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz.
Following last week’s thrilling win over defending champions Fenerbahce, Panathinaikos found themselves on the wrong side of a tight score-line as Baskonia stunned the Greek Champions to collect their first of their EuroLeague campaign.
Nikos Pappas led all scorers with 22 points, while Nikos Calathes dished out a career-high 14 assists; however, the Panathinaikos duo would be outshined by the Baskonia trio of Beaubois Jayson Granger, and Tornike Shengelia which combined for 50 points between them.
Panathinaikos would take the early initiative as the Trifylli scored 11 points quickly after tip-off to establish an early lead. Baskonia would respond with a run of their own and the Spanish side would soon take the upper hand to finish the first frame ahead 27-24.
Another tight quarter would follow as both sides failed to establish a healthy lead before halftime. Panathinaikos would go on to outscored Baskonia by just one point to cut the deficit to just two points at 47-45 in favour of the hosts.
Panathinaikos would be far more effective in the third quarter. The Trifylli’s offense would finally climb back in front in the frame , and a 22-16 run in the frame would put Panathinaikos in front by five points heading into the decisive.
It wouldn’t take long for Baskonia to pull back level; however, the Spanish side would wait until the final buzzer to pull ahead for good. A Pappas miss at one end ultimately saw Beaubois surge to the Panathinaikos basket at the other end before sinking a dagger floater with 1.5 seconds left on the clock. Panathinaikos would have one chances at a reply, but despite advancing the ball via their timeout, the Athenians were unable to even offer up a shot at the win as KC Rivers was contained until the final buzzer.
The loss drops Panathinaikos to 2-3 on the season, and more worrying to 0-3 on the season in the EuroLeague.
Panathinaikos return to domestic action on Sunday when the Trifylli tangle with AEK in the Greek Cup semi-final at OAKA, before returning to EuroLeague action for the all-Greek affair against Olympiacos.
