Big come from behind win for AEL Limassol over AEK
CYPRIOT 1st DIV.: CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYOFFS (MATCHDAY 5)
|AEL Limassol||3 - 2||AEK Larnaca|
Mitrea (OG) 61'
AEL Limassol came from behind to record an important 3:2 home win over AEK Larnakas.
AEK created the first real chance of the match, as early as the fourth minute of play, when a weak back pass from Lafrance towards his own goalkeeper, Vozinha, was intercepted by Giannou, who disappointingly failed to find the target. AEL responded and before the 10th minute, the Limassol side had opportunities through Torres, Silva, and Lafrance to open the scoring, however the chances went to waste. The rest of the first half did not produce much action and the teams went into the break goalless.
The breakthrough came in the 51st minute as Cases sent the ball into AEL’s penalty area, Trickovski broke the offside trap and beat Vozinha to give the Larnakeis the 1:0 lead. AEL were quick to respond just four minutes later, with Leandro Silva’s header in the heart of AEK’s defense to bring things level. The goal helped AEL grow in confidence, but a mistake from Mitrea from a set play resulted in an own goal that re-gave AEK the lead in the 61st minute.
The home side did not get discouraged and they continued their efforts to get back into the game, which proved successful in the end. In the 67th minute, Leandro Silva had a shot that drifted just wide of AEK’s right post and a minute later, Torres and Teixeira had a double chance which were both denied by Juan Pablo.
Benitez found the much awaited equalizing goal for AEL in the 80th minute as his free kick scraped passed the goal line despite Pablo’s attempt to keep the shot out. The home side kept the momentum going and five minutes later, Leandro Silva with his second of the night gave AEL a well deserved come from behind victory.
AEK wasted a great chance to return to 3rd place while failing to keep the momentum going from their big win against leaders, Apollon, on Saturday. By showing more passion and willingness than their opponents, AEL grabbed three points and remain well established in 5th place, seven points behind AEK.
