Nearly two years since his last Greek Basket League appearance, Sofoklis Schortsanitis is set for a return to the Greek top flight after signing a contract with Trikala.
Trikala, who currently sit second-from-bottom in the Greek Basket League, expect Schortsanitis to take part in their tilt with Rethymno on Saturday.
The Greek center, who is also known by his nickname “Big Sofo,” last featured in the Greek Basket League with PAOK during the 2015/2016 season, but his contract wasn’t renewed by the Thessaloniki outfit making him a free agent in the following offseason.
After deliberating retirement during the first few months of the 2016/2017 season, Apollon Patras signed Schortsanitis to a professional tryout in December 2016; however, just a couple of weeks after signing the contract, Schortsanitis suffered a season-ending injury during one of Apollon’s practices.
As a result, Schortsanitis’ contract with the club was terminated; leaving the former draft pick of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers a free agent heading into the 2017/2018 season.
Trikala, who are 2-8 on the season, will hope the signing of Schortsanitis will give the club the required boost to escape the relegation zone. The Sakafliades are currently riding an ugly six-game losing streak in the Greek Basket League.
