Greek Basketball’s big guns all clinched a spot in the semi-finals of the Greek Cup on Wednesday following landslide wins for Panathinaikos Superfoods, Olympiacos, and AEK.
With the league season tipping-off in a few days, Greece’s biggest clubs made an early statement in the first competition of the new season.
6-time defending champions Panathinaikos defeated Kolossos H Hotels 84-54 as the Athenian club looks to improve on their record of 18 title wins. Panathinaikos led from start to finish with Ian Vougioukas finishing as joint top-scorer for the Trifylli as he and former Olympiacos forward Matt Lojeski tallied 14 points each; Nikos Calathes added 13 points. Meanwhile, AEK also notched a one-sided victory with a 92-67 triumph over Rethymno. Carving out a commanding lead in the opening quarter, AEK cruised to a semi-final berth with Kelsey Barlow’s 16 points leading the way; Dusan Sakota added a further 15 points for AEK. Despite Stefan Moody’s game-high 25 points, Rethymno were never in the contest as a poor shooting night ultimately decided the Cretan Kings’ fate. Highlights can be found here.
Janis Strelnieks was the MVP for Olympiacos as the Piraeus giants dispatched GSL Faros 2017, 97-67 in Larissa. Olympiacos were kept in check with just a three-point lead after the first frame, before eventually extending that lead to nine by the interval. A more clinical Olympiacos in the second half paved the way for the dominant victory, with the Strelnieks 16 points the best for Olympiacos. Fellow summer signing Hollis Thompson added a further 15 points for Olympiacos, while Faros’ Roeland Schaftenaar led all scorers with 18 points.
The draw for the semi-final round of the Greek Cup takes place on Monday, October 9 with the semi-finals scheduled for November 5.
