Brave Sakkari bows out of Wimbledon
Maria Sakkari’s Wimbledon adventure ended on Friday after Greece’s 21-year-old woman's number one tennis ace was beaten in straight sets in the third round by home favourite Johanna Konta.
Konta, the Australian-born British number one, was a class above Sakkari, seeing off her rival by a 6-4 6-1 scoreline.
The sixth seed is leading the odds with some bookmakers, despite only reaching the second week for the first time following her win over Sakkari.
No British woman has won the singles title since Virginia Wade in 1977 and hopes are high that Konta can go all the way. She is ignoring being labelled as the favourite to win the Wimbledon title though.
"I'm pretty sure favourites come and go and change daily. I'm just happy to be here," said the 26-year-old. "I don't spend too much time thinking about that kind of talk or listening to it."
Sakkari was the first Greek tennis player to make the third round of the Wimbledon since Eleni Daniilidou did so in 2005.
