Brave Sakkari bows out in Third Round
Maria Sakkari's US Open run ended in the round of 32, as she fell to 9th seeded American Venus Williams, 6-3 6-4. The 22-year-old Greek put up a good fight against the two-time US Open champion, as the two players were only separated by one break in each set.
Despite the loss, it was still a memorable tournament for the Greek. It was her third US Open appearance, and first time making it to the third round. In 2015, Sakkari made it through three rounds of qualifying before falling in the first round of the main draw. In 2016, Sakkari received automatic entry into the main draw but came up short in the first round. This time around, she got her first ever top 30 win and became the first Greek player to ever make the third round at three majors in the same year. Additionally, she got to compete on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest stadium in tennis, for the first time in her career.
Sakkari, though currently ranked 95 in the world, has a career-best ranking of 84. With this result, she will be ranked between 82 and 84 after the conclusion of the US Open, depending on the results of Russian Maria Sharapova and Estonian Kaia Kanepi. With few ranking points to defend for the rest of the season, it is safe to say that Sakkari will continue to rise up the rankings as long as she keeps playing as well as she did in New York. She will head to Asia for her next few tournaments in Japan and China.
