The back half of Panathinaikos’ EuroLeague campaign started off on the right foot as the Greek Champions defeated Anadolu Efes 90-79 at OAKA on Thursday night.

Nikos Calathes guided the Trifylli past their Aegean rivals as the Greek international led his side in scoring on the night with 17 points and added a further 9 assists.

A 20-point effort from Josh Adams wasn’t nearly enough to prevent Efes to slip to 4-12 on the season, as the Turkish side continues to struggle to recreate last season’s form.

Panathinaikos set the pace early with the home side rolling to a 23-12 lead after the first quarter. Clinical three-point shooting from Nikos Pappas helped to extend that lead before half time as Panathinaikos grew their lead to 47-33.

Efes looked keen to make a comeback in the third quarter, but the Turkish side’s offense struggled with Panathinaikos’ physical defense. Despite not scoring as easily as they did in the first half, Xavi Pascual’s men were still able to keep their 14-point lead after three quarters (70-56).

Efes would continue to fightback in the fourth quarter, but again Panathinaikos’ defense held strong. The best the Turks could cut the deficit to was 11 points, with Panathinaikos happy to close out the contest playing shutdown defense.

The win takes Panathinaikos to 11-5 on the season, good enough to temporarily take sole possession of third place in the league standings head of Zalgiris Kaunas’ clash with Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on Friday.

Panathinaikos will look to improve on their record next week at home against Barcelona; the Trifylli will be keen to avenge a 98-71 loss to the Catalan club back on the opening day of the EuroLeague season.

Efes, meanwhile, remain at the foot of the EuroLeague standings and will be hoping to begin the climb from the EuroLeague basement at home against Crvena Zvezda next week.
