Calathes named MVP of 2016/17 Basket League
Nick Calathes was named this season’s Stoiximan.gr Basket League MVP.
Panathinaikos’ captain was named the MVP of the Stoiximan.gr Basket League for the 2016-17 season following the voting results amongst the coaches, team captains, journalists, and fans. Although Chris Singleton finished ahead of Calathes in the coaches’ and captains’ vote (39% to 36%), the 28-year old dominated his teammate in the journalists’ and fans’ votes (38% to 19%) leading him to this year’s honour.
Following the election results, ESAKE proceeded to the following statement: “In the first season of Panathinaikos’ post-Diamantidis era, Nick Calathes, as captain, led Panathinaikos Superfoods to the conquest of the Greek double; both the titles of the Basket League and the Greek Cup.”
After a turbulent season that had numerous ups and downs, the Greek-American point guard was given this distinct honour as he played a decisive role in Panathinaikos’ return to the top of Greek basketball.
After receiving the award for the first time in his career, Calathes stated: “It is a great honour to be named as the Stoiximan.gr Basket League MVP of the season. An honour that could not be won without the help of both my teammates and coaches. Personal titles hold no value if they are not accompanied by team excellence. For this reason, it is very important that we all together achieved the goals we set at the beginning of the season which was to make Panathinaikos champions of Greece.”
Nick Calathes was the regular season assist leader, counting 145 assists (5.57 per game) while he finished as the leading scorer in the playoffs counting 120 points (13.3 per game).
