James Gist provided a big block in the dying moments to cement Panathinaikos’ third straight win in the EuroLeague courtesy of an 82-81 win over Anadolu Efes on Thursday night.
A tight encounter on the night saw Calathes lead the way for Panathinaikos as the man most known for his playmaking abilities turned scorer with 29 points. Calathes’ efforts almost reached a triple-double as the Greek international also tallied 10 assists, but finished just a rebound shy of a triple-double as he managed to haul-in nine boards.
Panathinaikos opened up a seven-point lead in the first quarter and managed to stay in front despite constant efforts by Efes to chip away at the lead.
The Trifylli were still in front by halftime, but by the end of the third quarter the lead was down to just two points at 62-60 with Brock Motum the leading scorer for the Turkish side on the night with 21 points.
It was Errick McCollum, and not Motum, who would have the chance to put Efes in the lead in the dying moments but a clutch block from Gist denied the American from putting Efes in front and preserved the Panathinaikos lead for a monumental road win.
The win moves Panathinaikos to 5-3 on the season, a remarkable turnaround after a poor start to their campaign. Efes find themselves rock-bottom in the standings as they are now 2-6; a shade of themselves in comparison to last season’s campaign.
Panathinaikos will target a fourth straight win when the Trifylli travel to take on Zalgiris Kaunas in Lithuania, while Efes will look to improve on their poor form against Real Madrid.
