The 31-year old Ukrainian defender joined AEK in summer 2016, becoming an integral part of the Kitrinomavri’s set-up. Since moving to Athens, Chygrynskiy has made 35 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals along the way including a hugely important marker against Olympiacos in February 2018. AEK announced the contract on their official website, stating that Chygrynskiy’s new deal will run until the completion of the 2019/2020 season with the option of extending it for another year.
Immediately after putting pen to paper on the contract, Chygrynskiy spoke of his delight: “When I came to AEK two years ago, I didn’t know how long I would stay here, but I am glad I can be a part of this club’s history,” stated Chygrynskiy. “In this team, I have managed to return to my previous level. The first step to the championship is on Sunday against Panathinaikos. Step by step, we will fight to achieve our goal and the most important thing is to be in first place when the season ends. Let’s go for the championship!”
Chygrynskiy rose to fame in 2009, when he helped Shakhtar Donetsk win the UEFA Cup with some brilliant performances. Barcelona promptly signed the Ukrainian star, but it didn’t work out in Catalonia and he moved back to Shakhtar a year later. He transferred to Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk before joining AEK in 2016. Overall, Chygrynskiy has played in 29 matches for Ukraine’s senior national team.
