Conde at the double as Panathinaikos stunned by PAS Giannina
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 21
|PAS Giannina||2 - 1||Panathinaikos|
|Conde 30',45'+1'||Garoufalias (OG) 67'|
Panathinaikos’ inconsistent form continued on Saturday as the Greens suffered a 2-1 defeat at PAS Giannina as prolific Spanish striker Pedro Conde played the role of executioner with two great goals.
After two successive goalless draws, it was hoped that Panathinaikos would show improvement at the Zosimades stadium, but Conde grabbed the headlines instead with two strikes in the opening half (30, 45+1).
Marinos Ouzounidis’ Panathinaikos team did improve in the second half, and were better than they have been in recent weeks, but all the had to show when the final whistle blew was a consolation goal, Iraklis Garoufalias the unlucky PAS player scoring an own goal in the 68th minute.
Panathinaikos did have chances to level the match but a combination of poor finishing and competent goalkeeping from PAS custodian Markos Vellidis mean that did not happen.
In the end, PAS celebrated their first home victory since October 28 when they beat Kerkyra 2-1, and leapfrogged Panathinaikos into ninth place with the Greens dropping to 10th spot.
The 29-year-old Conde also moved on to 11 goals for the season, and has an impressive record of 24 strikes in 42 appearances for PAS.
It’s worth noting that PAO, who continue to struggle with crippling financial problems, have not won an away match all season with less than a third of the campaign to go.
