On Tuesday, the European playoff draw paired Croatia and Greece in the World Cup qualifying playoffs for one spot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The draw results were not welcomed by the Croatian press as many news outlets in the country characterized Greece as the toughest possible opponent for their respective national team.

Below are the headlines from the major Croatian new sites after the draw results on Tuesday.

Jutarnji.hr: “Dramatic playoffs: Croatia were drawn with possibly the most difficult opponent in the playoffs in a clash for a ticket to the 2018 World Cup.”

24sata.hr: “Davor Suker wanted to avoid Greece at all costs and that is who Croatia drew in the World Cup playoffs. The most difficult opponent was drawn by the legend Hierro. The road to Russia will be decided in 180 minutes of fire against a team that has a doctorate in defensive football.”

Vecernji.hr: “Croatia drew an unpleasant opponent, Greece. We have bad experiences with the Greeks! Out of all of our possible opponents, we have the worst statistics with Greece, one win, two losses, and three draws.”

Dnevnik.hr: “Difficult draw! For us to go to the World Cup, we must eliminate Greece, one opponent we wanted to avoid.”

Novilist.hr: “We drew Greece! Out of all of our possible opponents, we have the worst prior history with the Greeks.”

tportal.hr: “Croatia will face a difficult Greek side to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.”
