Olympiacos suffered a narrow defeat in a top-of-the-table showdown against CSKA Moscow on Wednesday night…
CSKA Moscow preserved their lead atop the EuroLeague standings with a narrow 89-81 win over Olympiacos at the Megasport Arena in Moscow on Wednesday night.
The win saw CSKA clinch first spot heading into the playoffs, while Olympiacos slipped to their second consecutive defeat in the EuroLeague following last week’s defeat at the hands of Barcelona.
Georgios Printezis notched 24 points to lead all Olympiacos scorers on a night he made his 250th appearance for the club in the EuroLeague. Vassilis Spanoulis tallied 17 points in just under 30 minutes of action, but Olympiacos were made to pay for a poor second quarter in which the Piraeus giants only managed 14 points.
Nando de Colo posted 25 points to lead CSKA Moscow to their fifth straight win as the French international provided plenty of depth scoring off the bench.
Olympiacos grabbed an early first quarter lead at 26-23, but quickly saw that lead disappear in the second frame as CSKA upped the tempo and the pressure on Olympiacos’ offense.
The Russians would continue to add to their lead throughout the game, but with Olympiacos only down seven points heading into the fourth quarter, there certainly was an opportunity for Yiannis Sfairopoulos’ men to flip the script.
Unfortunately for the Erythrolefki there would be no trademark comeback against CSKA on this night as the final buzzer beater sealed Olympiacos’ fate as the new third-place club in the league standings.
Olympiacos will look to rebound quickly as they face a quick turnaround this week with Anadolu Efes visiting Piraeus on Friday.
