Christakis Christoforou’s team took a 10th-minute lead after Roy Chipolina headed a Costas Charalambides cross past his own goalkeeper. The home fans were celebrating though when Anthony Hernandez finished clinically to level from a clever Liam Walker pass as the Cypriots failed to build on their lead.

But there was joy for Cyprus late on when Jason Demetriou picked out Pieros Sotiriou with a great cross which he headed home to win the match for the visitors.

The result means Cyprus move above Estonia, who were beaten 2-0 by Belgium - up to fourth place with seven points.

Cyprus have now taken four points from their last two games while the loss extends Gibraltar’s losing streak to 16 with the tiny nation still without a single World Cup qualifying point to their name.
