Marcus Berg struck a last-gasp winner to win a derby match for the second week running as Panathinaikos camp out on top 3-2 against AEK Athens in an enthralling match between the two city rivals at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday.
Berg, who scored the only goal of the game when the Greens triumphed over Olympiacos last weekend, was again the MVP for Marinos Ouzounidis’ team, putting Panathinaikos 2-0 ahead just three minutes after Victor Klonaridis had opened the scoring in the 24th minute for the visitors.
Manolo Jimenez’s AEK, who were second best for long patches of this SuperLeague Matchday 26 clash, fought their way back into the game to pull level at 2-2 after goals from former Greens forward Lazaros Christodoulopoulos (52) and Thomas Pekhart (77).
But in-form Sweden striker Berg, the SuperLeague’s top scorer, proved his pedigree for the big occasion once again by finishing off a fine move involving Sebastian Leto and Robin Lod to claim a second derby win in successive matches.
The result cemented Panathinaikos’ grip on a playoff place as they keep hold of fourth place and are now seven points ahead of Skoda Xanthi, who occupy sixth spot - the first place outside of the playoff berths.
AEK remain unmoved in fifth spot - the final playoff place - but the Kitrinomavri are just two points ahead of Xanthi.
