Kerkyra had Thuram on yet another great night as they defeated Veria 2-0 with two second half goals. Maloun opened the scoring with an own goal, that was created by Thuram, and the Brazilian added a second to secure Kerkyra’s victory in the 62nd minute.
Both sides played conservatively in the first half as neither team risked on the attack to find an opener. Kerkyra had more shots in the first half, but it was Veria who created the best chance in the opening 45 minutes with Linardos’ header in the 15th minute.
After a goalless first half, Kerkyra came out on the attack with their best player, Thuram, creating the first chance in the 46th minutes (saved by Lopez). Four minutes later, the breakthrough came for Kerkyra as Maloun lost the battle with Thuram and sent the ball into his own net, giving Kerkyra the 1-0 lead. Thuram was in the action once again and from another corner, his header doubled Kerkyra’s advantage in the 62nd minute. The goal secured the hosts’ victory as Veria was unable to provide a response to get back into the game. The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 85th minute but Melikiotis was denied from the spot and Kerkyra held onto the 2-0 victory.
The win moves Kerkyra up to 10 points as Veria remain on 6 points and second from bottom in the standings. After the international break, Veria will need a victory when they host Levadiakos while Kerkyra travel to Thessaloniki to play Iraklis.
