GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 9

Atromitos 0 - 1 Olympiacos
Ideye 54'

Olympiacos defeated Atromitos 0-1 at the Peristeri Stadium with a second half goal from Brown Ideye. However, the hosts were clearly the better side in the first half and found the back of the net, but their goal was wrongfully called back by the officials led by Delfakis. Atromitos was extremely unsatisfied with the refereeing as they feel a two penalties should have been awarded to them in the first half. Despite that, Olympiacos continues to lead the way in the Superleague with their 4th consecutive win in league play.

Atromitos was clearly the better team in the first half as the ball remained in Olympiacos’ end of the field for most of the opening 45 minutes. In the 6th minute, Atromitos was not awarded a penalty from da Costa’s handball in the penalty area sparking a reaction from the home supporters early on in the game. Atromitos followed with three golden opportunities to take the lead with Stojcev (twice) and Vasiliou but neither player could find the opener. In the 26th minute, Le Tallec finally found the breakthrough for his side, however his goal was wrongfully called back due to offsides. In a half where Atromitos dominated, the final action included yet another controversial decision by the referee Delfakis, when Keita was brought down in the box by Kapino with the referee not awarding a penalty.

With Olympiacos surprisingly level at the break, the Erythrolefki did not waste their first real chance on goal and a powerful header from Ideye (Fortounis’ cross) gave his side the 0-1 lead in the 54th minute. The goal was a dagger to the hosts who could not keep up their dominating performance from the first half as they only created one good chance, through Stojcev in the 80th minute, to pull level. Olympiacos comfortably held onto their lead and earned yet another victory away from home against an inform team at a difficult stadium.

Today’s win is Olympiacos’ sixth straight in all competitions against difficult opponents such as AEK, PAOK, Panionios (away), Astana in the Europa League, and now away to a tough Atromitos side. As for Atromitos, it is their first defeat under their new manager Georgios Korakakis who has rejuvenated the club since his appointment. With today’s result, Olympiacos now has a 7 point lead atop the standings before second placed Panathinaikos and AEK play in their respective matches tomorrow. Atromitos remain in 6th place on 10 points. Next weekend Olympiacos will host their big rivals Panathinaikos while Atromitos travel to the OAKA Stadium to face AEK.
