Douvikas attracting attention with hot scoring form

Young striker Anastasios Douvikas is offering real hope for Greek football, standing out as the star man of the Greece U19 side which recently competed in the elite round of European championship qualification.

Although the under 19 Greek national team failed to qualify for the 2018 European championship after losing out to Italy and Poland in Group 3, Douvikas impressed with excellent performances. The 18-year old forward scored twice in a thrilling 3:2 victory against the Czech Republic, before hitting the target in a 1:3 loss to the Poles. Douvikas netted three goals in the first qualification stage too, meaning that he finished the campaign with six markers in as many games.

A product of the Asteras Tripolis system, Douvikas progressed to the first team during the current season, competing in 15 Super League matches and scoring the one goal against Levadiakos in a 2:0 win back in November. He participated in three Greek Cup matches as well, grabbing a goal for himself in a 2:1 victory over Chania Kissamikos. While only 18, the hitman has gradually earned the trust of Asteras head coach Savvas Pantelidis, regularly receiving around 20 minutes on the pitch as a second half substitute. Nevertheless, if Douvikas transfers his hot scoring form to senior level, Pantelidis will be forced into including him in the starting line-up more often.

However, Douvikas may not be playing his football in Greece much longer. According to reports, clubs from the Netherlands, Spain and England are closely following Douvikas’ progress, taking note of his scoring feats with the under 19 national side. Douvikas’ contract with Asteras Tripolis does run through to 2022, but it’s perfectly feasible that a club from a supposedly superior league will snap him up when the summer arrives.

Anastasios Douvikas’ 2017/2018 season statistics:

Super League - 15 appearances, 1 goal;
Greek Cup - 3 appearances, 1 goal;
Greece U19 - 10* appearances, 7 goals.

*-Includes friendly matches.
