Early Christmas gift from AEK to Olympiacos & PAOK
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 15
|AEK||0 - 0||Apollon Smyrnis|
AEK moved back to the top of the SuperLeague on Saturday despite being held to a 0-0 home draw by Apollon Smyrni at the Olympic Stadium, but look to have offered title rivals Olympiacos and PAOK an early Christmas gift.
Manolo Jimenez’s team had been temporarily replaced at the top by Atromitos, who were 3-1 winners at Kerkyra earlier in the day, but after picking up a point in a disappointing matchday 15 scoreless draw, AEK have collected 31 points and are now just one point clear.
Olympiacos can take over the leadership if they beat PAS Giannina at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium on Sunday, while PAOK can move level on 31 points with AEK if they beat Platanias later on Saturday.
AEK enjoyed total control of the match at the Olympic Stadium, but wasted several good chances and had two decent claims for penalties turned down in the 23rd and 80th minutes.
The protagonists of the two controversial incidents were the same, with Apollon midfielder Tasos Papazoglou seeming to hold back AEK defender Vassilis Lambropoulos on both occasions.
But the calls for spot-kicks fell on deaf ears and the visitors kept it tight at the back in the closing stages to earn themselves a vital points in their effort to avoid relegation. Apollon are now 14th in the table with 12 points.
