GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 30
|Panetolikos||0 - 2||Asteras Tripolis|
Asteras Tripolis sealed Greece’s final Europa League spot on the last day of the season on Sunday after claiming an impressive 2-0 away win at Panaitolikos in Agrinio, while rivals Xanthi’s match at Panathinaikos was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch after heavy rainfall in Athens.
Goals from experienced midfielder Matias Iglesias and striker Michalis Manias sealed the three points for the visitors. Who had too much quality for Traianos Dellas’ Panaitolikos team.
Experienced midfielder Iglesias opened the scoring for Asteras after 24 minutes with his fourth goal of the season, and Manias doubled the advantage with his 12th of the season for the Arcadians 12 minutes from full-time.
The result means that Asteras ended the season on 45 points and can not be caught by Xanthi, for even if they beat Panathinaikos when the match is played at a later date, Asteras have a superior head-to-head record.
At the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium, the referee called the Panathinaikos and Xanthi players off the pitch after just seven minutes if play with heavy rainfall causing the pitch to resemble a swimming pool more than a place for playing football.
In any case the result would have no bearing on the battle for fifth place, while the best Panathinaikos can do when the match is replayed is to move from 13th to 12th, if they manage to beat Xanthi.
