Euroleague Title in Greek Hands for 7th Straight Year
Olympiacos may have lost the Euroleague title to Fenerbahce this past weekend, however it was not the end of an interesting streak. Even though a Turkish club won Europe’s premier club basketball championship, there was still a Greek flavor to the victory.

For the 7th consecutive season, at least one Greek player or coach has been involved in celebrating a Euroleague title success. Greece’s representative this year was Fenerbahce guard Kostas Sloukas.
This unique run began back in 2011 when Panathinaikos claimed European glory. That was followed by Olympiacos who managed back-to-back Euroleague title wins in 2012 and 2013.
A Greek club couldn’t managed a 4th straight continental crown in 2014 as Maccabi Tel-Aviv won the championship, however the streak was kept alive by the fact that in the Israeli club ranks was Sofoklis Schortsanitis. Another Greek player, Giannis Bourousis, won the title in 2015 as part of the Real Madrid side that claimed the championship.
No Greek player was able to win the Euroleague in 2016, however a coach kept the run intact as Dimitris Itoudis led CSKA Moscow to success in the final.
Sloukas’ presence in the Fenerbahce team made it a remarkable seven years in a row with Greek hands on the trophy.
