AEK Athens made an excellent start to 2018 by producing a powerful performance to beat Panaitolikos 4-1 in Agrinio on Saturday evening and move top of the SuperLeague.
Manolo Jimenez’s team, who led the standings for most of the first half of the season before Olympiacos took over top spot just before Christmas, were ahead after just six minutes thanks to Tasos Bakasetas.
A penalty from Lazaros Christodoulopoulos after 36 minutes and a further goal from Argentine forward Sergio Araujo on the stroke of half-time put AEK firmly in command at half-time with a 3-0 lead.
Portuguese defender Helder Lopes made it 4-0 to the visitors on the hour mark but there wa some cheer for the home fans when Romanian forward Vlad Morar pulled a goal back from the penalty spot six minutes later.
There was to be no glorious comeback for the home fans to savour, however, as AEK finished strongly to chalk up another important victory which saw them leapfrog Olympiacos into top spot.
AEK now have 34 points - the same total as PAOK, who they lead on goal difference. Olympiacos, who play Larissa on Sunday, are third with 32 points, while Atromitos - who visit Apollon Smyrnis on Sunday - are fourth with 30 points.
