Razvan Lucescu’s team simply had too much quality for the home side, who battled bravely and managed to go in at half-time with the scores locked at 1-1 after Xenafon Panos had levelled Leo Matos’ early fifth-minute striker for PAOK.
But PAOK went through the gears in a powerful second half performance, with another goal from Matos in the 58th minute, and further strikes from Diego Biseswar (70), Djalma Campos (80) and Yevhen Shakhov in added time sealed an easy win.
The result means Trikala will need a gargantuan effort to overturn the tie in the second leg after the Christmas break, with PAOK looking firm favorites for a spot in the last eight as they look to defend the trophy they won last season.
Another bright point for PAOK was the return to action of promising 23-year-old Greek forward Giannis Mystakidis, who came on for eight minutes to play for the first time in eight months due to a severe knee ligament injury suffered last April.
