Just one day after the senior team won the Greek Cup in early May, PAOK’s youth side defeated Levadiakos 4:2 at home to claim U20 Super League glory, finishing in first place with 75 points ahead of Panathinaikos (71) and third-placed Olympiacos (69). In connection with the season’s completion, let’s see who were the top five scorers in the division and what prospects they have of making a name for themselves at the highest level.
Dimitris Emmanouilidis (Panathinaikos, 19 goals)
Panathinaikos failed to win the U20 Super League title, but they still have a reason to smile, as 17-year old Dimitris Emmanouilidis became the championship’s top scorer with 19 goals. Originally a right winger, Emmanouilidis moved inside to fantastic effect with the Greens, scoring twice on the final day against Platanias to occupy first place in the scorers list. During the campaign, he even made his senior debut for Panathinaikos, participating in the Greek Cup fixture against Panachaiki and the Super League match with Panionios at home. Having been in red-hot form with the youth team, Emmanouilidis will expect to be more involved with the senior side next season
Christos Giousis (AEK Athens, 18 goals)
Skillful midfielder Christos Giousis is well-known to AEK fans, after he scored the winning goal in the dramatic Greek Cup showdown against Kallithea in a 3:2 victory. Giousis hasn’t received a lot of chances from boss Manolo Jimenez, but he proved his worth with the under 20’s, hitting the target on 18 occasions. Remained on the substitutes’ bench in the 0:2 cup final defeat to PAOK at the Olympic Stadium.
Alexandros Gargalatizidis (PAOK, 18 goals)
Just like AEK rival Giousis, the young Alexandros Gargalatzidis registered 18 goals, taking a leading role in PAOK’s memorable U20 Super League triumph. Capable of playing on the flanks or as a centre-forward, Gargalatzidis boasts real potential and has a decent scoring record to back him up. He was only one goal behind Emmanouilidis, but after winning the championship trophy, he probably doesn’t mind that much.
Alexandros Voilis (Olympiacos, 15 goals)
Number four in the ranking is Olympiacos hitman Alexandros Voilis, who beat opposing goalkeepers 15 times in the campaign at 17 years of age. A classic number nine, Voilis showed glimpses of promise when playing in the UEFA Youth League, scoring one goal and tallying an assist in six tournament appearances. His Olympiacos contract runs out in 2020.
Giannis Varkas (Olympiacos, 15 goals)
The second Olympiacos man on the list, Giannis Varkas also grabbed 15 goals in the U20 Super League. Regarded as one of the most talented players in the Olympiacos system, Varkas is already 20 and is aiming to soon be included in the Thrylos’ main team. Joined the club in 2014 from Olympiakos Chalkidas.
