Frustrated Panionios held by Xanthi in Nea Smyrni
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 26
|Panionios||0 - 0||Xanthi|
Panionios were left frustrated on Sunday after dominating Xanthi for 90 minutes but failing to break the deadlock as their one-sided SuperLeague matchday 26 clash ended in a frustrating goalless draw.
Fifth-placed Xanthi came into the match looking to preserve their two-point lead over their closest rivals, and they managed to do so mainly due to some excellent goalkeeping from Živko Živković but also because of the hosts’ wasteful finishing.
The first to be denied by Zivkovic was Panionios’ Ivory Coast central defender Yaya Banana, whose header in the seventh minute was pushed to safety.
Just two minutes later, Giorgos Masouras fired a shot off target when he really should have made Zivkovic at least make a save.
Unfortunately for Panionios, that pattern did not change right up until the final whistle, with Banana (69) and Meja (73) both missing good chances to break the stubborn and effective resistance of Xanthi.
The result means it’s as you were for both teams, with Milan Rastavac’s Xanthi remaining in fifth place with 39 points, while Michalis Grigoriou’s Panthers are sixth a further two points behind after 26 matches.
