Greece will be without Giannis Antetokounmpo for the Ethniki’s upcoming 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifiers against Israel and Estonia beginning next month.
The Milwaukee Bucks superstar was not included in the 24-man roster that was released on Friday, though the likes of several EuroLeague players will included in the squad.
Georgios Papagiannis, who is expected to attend the NBA’s Summer League as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers, was also left out of the squad while fellow NBA compatriots Kostas Koufos and Tyler Dorsey were included in the team.
With progress to the next phase of qualification already secured, Antetokounmpo’s absence isn’t a major loss as it will allow Greece head coach Thanasis Skourtopoulos the ability to scout less frequent internationals — who have carried the load thus far in Greece’s campaign.
Greece’s road to the Finals in China next summer is expected to get much trickier in September when the Ethniki begin the second phase of qualifying for the final tournament.
It is expected that by the time September arrives, Antetokounmpo will make his long-awaited return to the National Team.
