Greece advanced to the Final-4 of the FINA World Youth Water Polo Championships after defeating Australia 11:8 in Friday’s quarterfinal.
The Greek team, who finished the group stages undefeated with four wins from four matches, came away with yet another big victory on Friday, defeating Australia 11:8 in the quarter-finals of the FINA World Youth Water Polo Championships. The Greeks will now play Serbia in the semi-finals, scheduled for Saturday at 21:00 (2:00 PM) local Greek time. Serbia defeated Italy 9:6 in the other quarterfinal.
The match was well balanced in the early parts as Greece held a slender one to two goal advantage until midway through the second period, when Greece pulled ahead by three goals (6:3). However, some defensive mistakes from the Greek team allowed Australia to pull back within one at 6:5 and 7:6. Greece once again took a two goal lead in the third period, but again, the Kangaroos would not go down without a fight.
The Ethniki Efivon, however, took full advantage of their extra man opportunities in the final quarter and pulled ahead 10:8 before Grammatikos shaped the final 11:8 scoreline in the dying moments, booking the Galanolefki’s place in Saturday’s semi-final.
Dimou led Greece with three goals while Chalivopoulos, Pateros, and Papanikolaou each scored two goals. Kalogeropoulos and Grammatikos scored one goal for the Greek team.
