Greece drop 9 places in FIFA Rankings
Greece dropped 9 places in the FIFA rankings to 47th for the month of September.
Greece’s poor results in their recent qualifiers against Estonia and Belgium not only saw the Ethniki drop to third in Group H of World Cup qualifying, but also affected their FIFA Ranking. Greece dropped nine places for the month of September from 38th to 47th after a draw at home to Estonia in late August and a loss to Belgium at the Karaiskakis a few days later.
Cyprus jumped in the rankings after a big win over Bosnia in Nicosia, moving up 24 places from 94th to 70th.
The next rankings will be released on October 16th after the conclusion of the group stages in World Cup qualifying. The October rankings will be used to determine the seeded and unseeded nations for the 8-team playoffs which will consist of the 8 best runner ups from the nine UEFA Qualifying groups. A reminder that the eight teams will be paired in a two legged playoff for the final 4 European tickets to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
If Greece manage to finish second in Group H and avoid being the worst runner-up side, the Ethniki will likely be unseeded in the playoff draw.
