Greece drown hosts to qualify for U20 World final
The U20 Greek national water polo team defeated the hosts, Serbia, 9-8 in the U20 World Championships semi-final and qualified for Sunday’s final against Croatia.
The Greek team opened the scoring with Skoubakis, who finished the game with three goals, but the Serbians managed to pull level by the end of the first period which ended 3-3. Greece outscored their opponents by one goal (4-3 and 2-1) in the second and third periods to take a two goal lead, 9-7, into the final quarter.
In the final eight minutes, the Greek defense stood strong and kept Serbia at one goal as the Galanolefki celebrated a big 9-8 win over the hosts to qualify for the final of the U20 World Championships.
The youngsters, who have set the bar high for the future of Greek water polo, will face Croatia in Sunday’s final which is set to start at 2:00 PM EST, 9:00 PM Greek time. Croatia, another traditional powerhouse in the water polo world, defeated Hungary 6-4 in the other semi-final.
