Greece Get Another World Cup Gift From Slovenia
FIFA WORLD CUP QUALIFYING - GROUP F (MATCHDAY 9)
|Slovenia||2 - 2||Scotland|
Greece edged nearer to a place in the World Cup qualifying playoffs on Sunday after Slovenia held Scotland to a 2-2 draw in Ljubljana on a dramatic night which saw the Scots’ dream of going to Russia 2018 shattered.
Greece, who are currently second in Group H two points ahead of Bosnia-Herzegovina after beating Cyprus 2-1 in Nicosia 24 hours earlier, now simply need to beat Gibraltar in their final group match in Athens on Tuesday to claim a place in the playoffs. Scotland’s failure to defeat Slovenia means Greece cannot finish as the last ranked runner-up.
Slovenia’S 2-2 draw against Gordon Strachan’s Scotland side is the second “gift” given to Greece in the space of 48 hours after Group H leaders Belgium defeated Bosnia 4-3 in a thrilling match in Sarajevo on Saturday – a result which allowed the Greeks to reclaim second spot in the group and with it a chance to enter the playoffs as one of the best runners-up.
Michael Skibbe’s Greece team will be confident that they have what it takes to see off Gibraltar, who have lost all of their nine group fixtures to date conceding 43 goals in the process while scoring just three.
