Greece With Big Chance For FIFA Rankings Jump
Greece’s two crunch clashes against Estonia and Belgium this week are of undeniable importance as far to the team’s 2018 FIFA World Cup aspirations.
With six points from those two matches, Michael Skibbe’s side will not only be on the brink of a playoff place, but could still have a shot at top spot in the group.
Another positive effect to be had from two wins is the bearing it will have on the Ethniki’s FIFA Ranking. Greece currently have 716 points in the FIFA Rankings, good enough for 38th position. Wins against Estonia and Belgium would bring the team’s points total to 905 and move them as high as 20-25th place (actual place would also depend on other results).
The importance of that? Besides the bump in prestige and pride after a couple years of difficulty where Greece’s FIFA Ranking nose-dived, Greece would also be in a stronger position with respect to a possible World Cup Play-off against a fellow second-place finisher. The higher Greece are in the FIFA Rankings, the better chance the team has of being seeded in the Play-off draw assuming they can finish second in Group H of European qualifying for Russia 2018.
