Greek captains step up in locker room
After a disappointing 4-1 loss in Croatia, Greece’s captains, Vasilis Torosidis and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, stepped up in the locker room and gave a morale boosting talk to their teammates.
The Greek players were in a troubled mental state on Thursday after suffering a disappointing 4-1 loss in Zagreb for the first leg of their World Cup qualifying playoff. Many individual mistakes and a rather poor team effort in general led to the tragic display and result, leaving Greece with minimal hope for a place at the 2018 World Cup next summer in Russia.
After the match, the two Greek captains, Vasilis Torosidis and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, stepped up and gave a morale boosting talk to their teammates.
The Borussia Dortmund man stated that the players need to recover mentally after this result and to bring out their Greek spirit and soul on Sunday in the return leg in Greece. He went on to say that although the Ethniki’s chances of qualifying are minimal, the players need to fight for the win and end this journey with a good display. The defender said that we must play for our prestige and to not destroy everything we have built in this qualifying campaign with Michael Skibbe in charge. He concluded by saying that everyone needs to rise up and give it their all on Sunday.
Torosidis, who has been through thick and thin with the Ethniki over the years, followed with similar remarks passing on the message that everyone must continue strong and to not give up. Everyone must remain united for the good of the national team.
