Greeks Abroad Recap: Karelis Comeback Continues; Sarris And 'Fetfa' Impress

Nikos Karelis’ comeback from a serious knee injury took another step forward this weekend with a goal in Genk’s 1-1 draw with Charleroi. That was the highlight in this week’s performances by Greek players abroad.

Karelis scored for the first time in seven matches games since his long injury lay-off. Elsewhere, Giorgos Sarris scored his first goal in Scotland, while Ioannis Fetfatzidis kept the assists coming with one in Saudi Arabia at the weekend. There were victories for national team regulars such as Kostas Manolas, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, and Andreas Samaris, while Ethniki players such as Kostas Mitroglou and Kyriakos Papadopoulos tasted defeat. 

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national players and/or Greeks playing in higher profile leagues)

Kostas Mitroglou (Marseille/Ligue 1): Came on as a substitute just before the hour mark in the 2-0 loss to Lyon.

Kostas Manolas (Roma/Serie A): Played the whole game in the 1-0 win over Cagliari

Vasilis Torosidis (Bologna/Serie A): Selected to the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Marios Oikonomou (SPAL/Serie A): Selected to the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Came on as a substitute in the 68th minute in the 5-1 win over Tondela

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Borussia Dortmund/Bundesliga): Played the full match in the 2-1 home win over Hoffenheim

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/Bundesliga): Tough display over 90 minutes in the 3-1 away defeat to Borussia Moenchengladbach

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/Bundesliga): Played as a left-back for the entire 90 minutes in the wild, 4-4 draw with Hannover

Kostas Stafylidis (Augsburg/Bundesliga): Selected to the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Tasos Donis (VfB Stuttgart/Bundesliga): Not selected to the squad due to injury

Jose Holebas (Watford/English Premier League): Played 82 minutes before being substituted in the 4-1 home loss to Huddersfield

Orestis Karnezis (Watford/English Premier League): Selected to the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Andreas Bouchalakis (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): Started and played 63 minutes in the 2-1 defeat away to Bristol City

Apostolos Vellios (Nottingham Forest/Championship): Not selected to the matchday squad

Giannis Gianniotas (Real Valladolid/Segunda Division): Selected to the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Giorgos Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): In the 1-1 home draw with Sivasspor, Tzavellas played the whole game

Michalis Sifakis (Samsunspor/Turkish 1. Lig): Maintained his place in the team and played all of the 2-1 win over Giresunspor

Nikos Karelis (Genk/Belgium First Division A): Scored his first goal since coming back from a serious knee injury in the 1-1 away draw with Charleroi

Alexandros Tziolis (Al-Fayha/Saudi Professional League): Played the full 90 minutes in the 2-1 home victory against Al-Hilal

Ioannis Fetfatzidis (Al-Ahli/Saudi Professional League): Served up an assist in the 4-1 win over Al-Ettifaq before coming off in the 76th minute

Sotiris Ninis (Maccabi Petah Tikva/Israeli Premier League): Selected to the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Stefanos Athanasiadis (Maccabi Haifa/Israeli Premier League): Not selected to the matchday squad
