Greeks Abroad recap: Mavropanos makes English bow, Fetfatzidis scores again

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

The real headline saw 20-year old defender Konstantinos Mavropanos make his long awaited debut in English football, competing for the under 23 Arsenal team. The ex PAS Giannina centre-back impressed with an excellent performance, displaying brilliant composure when in possession and winning every battle which came his way.

Elsewhere, Giannis Fetfatzidis continued his sparkling form in Saudi Arabia, scoring for Al Ahli in the third consecutive Professional League match. Fellow midfielder Tasos Donis helped Stuttgart defeat Hertha Berlin in the German Bundesliga, Sokratis Papastathopoulos couldn’t prevent Borussia Dortmund from drawing a blank with Wolfsburg, and Kostas Mitroglou sat on the bench for two Marseille matches in Ligue 1.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players and/or Greeks playing in higher profile leagues):

Kostas Mitroglou (Marseille/Ligue 1): The 29-year old was left on the bench for Marseille’s victories over Rennes (3:0) and Strasbourg (2:0).

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Came on as a substitute in the 81st minute in Benfica’s 3:1 triumph against Braga.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Borussia Dortmund/Bundesliga): Played the entire 90 minutes in Borussia’s 0:0 draw against Wolfsburg.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/Bundesliga): Remained on the bench for the 1:3 home loss to Bayern Munich.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/Bundesliga): Captained Hamburg to a 0:1 setback against Augsburg, played the whole match.

Tasos Donis (Stuttgart/Bundesliga): Started in the 1:0 win against Hertha Berlin, eventually being substituted after 59 minutes.

Jose Holebas (Watford/English Premier League): Stayed on the bench for Watford’s 2:2 draw with Southampton at home.

Orestis Karnezis (Watford/English Premier League): Also didn’t play any part in Watford’s match, watched proceedings unfurl with Holebas as an unused substitute.

Andreas Bouchalakis (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): Remained on the bench in Nottingham’s 0:1 loss to Aston Villa.

Apostolos Vellios (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): Not selected to the matchday squad.

Giannis Fetfatzidis (Al Ahli/Saudi Professional League): Scored for the third consecutive match, helping Al Ahli beat Al Batin 5:0. Played the entire match.

Sotiris Ninis (Maccabi Petah Tikva/Israel Premier League): Did not participate in the away victory against Sakhnin.

Alexandros Tziolis (Al Feiha/Saudi Professional League): On the pitch for the whole 90 minutes in a 1:0 home victory against Al-Nasr.

Kostas Stafylidis (Augsburg/Bundesliga): Wasn’t in the Augsburg team for the 1:0 victory against Hamburg in the German Bundesliga.

Giannis Gianniotas (Valladolid/Segunda Division): Left out of the squad in Valladolid’s away defeat against Barcelona B.


Kostantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Didn’t take any part in the 1:2 defeat to Bournemouth, however he then competed in the under 23 4:0 victory against Manchester United.

Dimitrios Konstantopoulos (Middlesbrough/English Championship): Stayed on the bench in the club’s 0:1 home loss to Fulham.

Ilias Chatzitheodoridis (Brentford/English Championship): Not selected to the matchday squad in the 2:0 win against Bolton.


Giannis Gelios (Augsburg/German Bundesliga): Did not feature in Augsburg’s roster for the 1:0 win in a game with Hamburg.


Kostas Rougalas (Westerlo/Division B): Played the whole match in the 0:0 draw against Roeselare.

Stergos Marinos (Charleroi/First Division A): Was on the pitch for the 90 minutes in a Belgian Cup 1:5 loss to Club Brugge.


Alexandros Katranis (Saint Etienne/Ligue 1): Wasn’t in the squad for the 2:0 home victory against Toulouse.

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Nimes/Ligue 2): Despite being introduced in the 84th minute, he couldn’t save Nimes from a 0:1 defeat to Lens at home.

Giannis Charontakis (Ajaccio/Ligue 2): Was not in the matchday squad as Ajaccio defeated Brest 3:2 on the road, again left out in Tuesday’s 1:1 draw with Orleans.


Markos Sifenos (Kerala Blasters/Indian Premier League): Started the home victory against Mumbai City, but was substituted at half-time.


Avraam Papadopoulos (Brisbane Roar/A-League): Played the 90 minutes as Brisbane lost 0:1 away to the Newcastle Jets in the Australian top tier.
