Greeks Abroad Review: Cholevas makes important assist in England
AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.
As a result of the ongoing winter break, many leagues are yet to resume action, however there were plenty of matches to enjoy in England, France, Italy and Portugal. In the English Premier League, the in-form Jose Cholevas contributed with an important assist for Watford, in turn helping his club defeated Crystal Palace on the road.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos was unable to prevent Arsenal from losing in a London derby, Odysseas Vlachodimos tallied a clean sheet for Benfica, and Kostas Manolas wasn’t involved in Roma’s victory in the Last 16 of the Italian Cup.
MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players and/or those playing in high profile leagues):
Konstantinos Mitroglou (Marseille/Ligue 1): Remained on the bench with Marseille drawing 1:1 at home to Monaco. Reports have suggested there is a major issue with the head coach and the Greek forward.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Played 90 minutes in defence with Arsenal surprisingly losing 0:1 at West Ham United.
Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): The young defender wasn’t a part of the Arsenal squad for the same match.
Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Contributed with an assist for the second goal in a 2:1 away victory at Crystal Palace. Played 90 minutes.
Kostas Manolas (AS Roma/Serie A): Didn’t play any part in the 4:0 triumph over Entella at the Stadio Olimpico in the Italian Cup.
Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Sat on the bench as Cagliari dropped a 0:2 home defeat against Atalanta in the Italian Cup Last 16.
Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Kept the other substitutes company with Napoli seeing off the challenge of Sassuolo 2:0 in the Italian Cup.
Odysseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Registered a clean sheet while playing the entire game against Santa Clara on the road. Benfica won 2:0. Midweek, he was on the bench with his team beating Vitoria Guimaraes 1:0 in the Portuguese Cup.
Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Remained on the bench in Benfica’s 2:0 victory over Santa Clara. However, on Tuesday, he was introduced after 45 minutes of the win against Vitoria Guimaraes and received a yellow card.
Alexandros Tziolis (Al Fayha/Saudi Professional League): Played 90 minutes as Al Fayha conceded a 1:4 defeat to Al Shabab.
Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): Received a yellow card and helped Leganes beat Huesca 1:0 at home by playing the full match.
Dimitris Konstantopoulos (Middlesbrough/English Championship): Missing from the squad as Middlesbrough defeated Birmingham City 2:1 away from home.
Kaloudis Lemonis (Telstar/Eerste Divisie): Couldn’t be found in the team with Telstar taking a 1:1 draw against Helmond in the second tier of Dutch football.
Nikolaos Ioannidis (Maritimo/Portuguese Primeira Liga): As usual, he wasn’t included in the Maritimo matchday roster. His club picked up a 1:0 away victory against Boavista.
Giorgos Katidis (Pribram/Czech First League): Was not included in the Pribram team for a 2:1 victory over Vlasim away.
Avraam Papadopoulos (Brisbane Roar/A-League): The Greek defender did not play any part in the heavy 0:5 defeat at home against Melbourne Victory.
