Greeks Abroad Review: Goals Galore For Greeks Abroad
 

AGONAsport’s George Tsitsonis rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

It was a weekend full of top-notch performances and many goals and assists for Greek players plying their trade abroad. Kostas Mitroglou netted his first goal in a Marseille shirt, snagging a point away for his side. His fellow attacker with the National Team, Tasos Donis, also opened his account in German with his first goal for VfB Stuttgart. 

Elsewhere, Tasos Karamanos and Giannis Skondras scored goals in Portugal and Scotland respectively. Panagiotis Retsos notched his first assist in the Bundesliga while Dimitris Siovas also laid an assist off for Leganes’ first goal. In the Dutch Eredivisie, Kostas Tsimikas assisted in Willem II’s victory. 

Below is an individual recap of how the Greek players abroad fared over the past weekend.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national players and/or Greeks playing in higher profile leagues)

Kostas Mitroglou (Marseille/Ligue 1): Scored the leveller in the 88th minute to earn his team a 3-3 draw away to Strasbourg. This was Mitroglou’s first goal for Marseille.

Kostas Manolas (Roma/Serie A): Started the match against Napoli, but limped off after 59 minutes of the 1-0 defeat

Vasilis Torosidis (Bologna/Serie A): Came on in the 73rd minute of the 2-1 win over SPAL

Marios Oikonomou (SPAL/Serie A): In the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Not selected in the matchday squad

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Borussia Dortmund/Bundesliga): Rough outing for the Greek international. Was controversially red-carded in 47th minute of his team’s 3-2 loss to RB Leipzig

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/Bundesliga): Not selected in the matchday squad

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/Bundesliga): The young talent played the entire match as a right-back and provided an assist for Leverkusen in the 2-2 draw with Wolfsburg.

Kostas Stafylidis (Augsburg/Bundesliga): Not selected in the matchday squad

Tasos Donis (VfB Stuttgart/Bundesliga): Another fine outing by Donis, who scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 38th minute helping Stuttgart defeat Koln. Donis came close to a second goal before coming off in the 80th minute. 

Dimitris Diamantakos (Bochum/ Bundesliga 2): Not selected in the matchday squad

Jose Holebas (Watford/English Premier League): Good performance by the left-back as he played the entire match in the 2-1 win over Arsenal

Orestis Karnezis (Watford/English Premier League): In the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Andreas Bouchalakis (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): In the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Zeca (FC Copenhagen/Danish SuperLiga): Played the full match in the 1-0 defeat to Odense

Apostolos Vellios (Nottingham Forest/Championship): Not selected in the squad

Giannis Gianniotas (Real Valladolid/Segunda Division): Started the match and came off after 61 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Almeria. In the previous midweek match, Gianniotas scored for Valladolid in a home win.

Giannis Maniatis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Came on 12 minutes from the end of his team’s 2-1 away loss to Istanbul Basaksehir

Giorgos Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Served his suspension for a red card, so was unavailable for selection

Georgios Samaras (Samsunspor/Turkish 1. Lig): Came on in the 46th minute of the 1-1 away draw with Rizespor

Michalis Sifakis (Samsunspor/Turkish 1. Lig): In the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Basis Lykogiannis (Sturm Graz/Austrian Bundesliga): Played the entire match and registered a strong performance in the 3-0 win over Austria Wien

Nikos Karelis (Genk/Belgium First Division A): Still not ready to return to action due to his injury

Alexandros Tziolis (Al-Fayha/Saudi Professional League): Not included in the matchday squad

Ioannis Fetfatzidis (Al-Ahli/Saudi Professional League): Started in the 5-2 win over Al-Shabab, but came off at the half.

Sotiris Ninis (Maccabi Petah Tikva/Israeli Premier League): In the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Stefanos Athanasiadis (Maccabi Haifa/Israeli Premier League): Still goalless in Israel for ‘Klaus.’ He played 74 minutes before substituted in the 2-2 draw with Maccabi Petach Tikva

ENGLAND

Dimitris Konstantopoulos (Middlesbrough/English Championship): In the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Ilias Chatzitheodoridis (Brentford/English Championship): In the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

GERMANY

Giannis Gelios (Augsburg/Bundesliga): Not selected in the matchday squad

Vaggelis Pavlidis (Bochum/Bundesliga 2): Not selected in the matchday squad

SPAIN

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/ La Liga): Superb in the 2-0 win over Malaga away. Siovas contributed with an assist for his team’s first goal.

ITALY

Michalis Iliadis (Salernitana/Serie B): Not selected in the matchday squad

PORTUGAL

Tasos Karamanos (Rio Ave/Primeira Liga): Opened the scoring in his team’s 4-0 Portuguese Cup win over Sanjoanense

FRANCE

Alexandros Katranis (Saint-Etienne/Ligue 1): In the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Christos Tasoulis (Lens/Ligue 2): Not in the matchday squad

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Nimes/Ligue 2): Started in the 4-1 win over Orleans, but came off in the 67th minute

HOLLAND

Kostas Lamprou (Ajax/Eredivisie): In the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Thanasis Karagounis (Zwolle/Eredivisie): Not selected in the matchday squad

Pantelis Chatzidiakos (Alkmaar/Eredivisie): Started in the 1-1 draw with Groningen, coming after 61 minutes.

Kostas Tsimikas (Willem II/Eredivisie): Started and played entire match in the 3-1 over Twente. Tsimikas chipped in with an assist for his team’s third goal.

BELGIUM

Dimitris Kolovos (Mechelen/First Division A): In the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Stergios Marinos (Charleroi/First Division A): Played the full 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw with Eupen

Stelios Kitsiou (St. Truiden/First Division A): Came on in the 78th minute of the 1-1 draw with Lokeren

Charis Charisis (St. Truiden/First Division A): Played the full match in the draw with Lokeren

Dimitris Goutas (St. Truiden/First Division A): In the matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Kostas Rougalas (Westerlo/Division B): Not selected in the matchday squad

TURKEY

Andreas Tatos (Elazigspor/ 1. Lig): Played the whole game in the 2-1 away defeat to Umraniyespor

Andreas Vasilogiannis (Umraniyespor/1. Lig): Started the match against Elazigspor, but came off three minutes from the end

SCOTLAND

Giannis Skondras (Hamilton/Premier League): His goal gave his team the lead versus Motherwell, but ultimately wasn’t enough to avoid a 2-1 defeat
