The Greeks plying their trade abroad were back in action this weekend as club football returned from the international break. One of the biggest highlights of the weekend was Kostas Manolas’ participation in Roma’s win over Lazio in the Derby della Capitale in Italy. Giannis Gianniotas’ impressive cameo appearances for Real Valladolid continued as the Greek international notched up another assist after coming on for the final 20 minutes of his team’s win in the Spanish Segunda Division. And finally, a big performance from former Aris and Olympiacos center-back Avraam Papadopoulos, who scored two goals in Brisbane Roar’s 3-1 victory over Melbourne City. 

Below is an individual breakdown of the Greeks abroad performances this past weekend 

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national players and/or Greeks playing in higher profile leagues)

Kostas Mitroglou (Marseille/Ligue 1): Played the full match in the 1-1 away draw to Bordeaux

Kostas Manolas (Roma/Serie A): Played the entire game in Roma’s 2-1 derby win over Lazio

Vasilis Torosidis (Bologna/Serie A): Selected to matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Marios Oikonomou (SPAL/Serie A): Came on at halftime in the 1-1 draw with Fiorentina

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Started in the Portuguese Cup win over Vitoria Setubal, coming off in the 86th minute

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Borussia Dortmund/Bundesliga): Played the first half in the 2-1 loss to VfB Stuttgart before coming off due to injury

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/Bundesliga): Played the full match in the 2-0 away defeat to Schalke

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/Bundesliga): Came on as an injury-time substitute in the 2-2 draw with RB Leipzig

Kostas Stafylidis (Augsburg/Bundesliga): Came on for the final 20 minutes of the 3-0 away defeat to Bayern Munich

Tasos Donis (VfB Stuttgart/Bundesliga): Not selected to matchday squad as he continues to recover from injury

Dimitris Diamantakos (Bochum/ Bundesliga 2): Came off after 59 minutes of the 1-1 draw with Greuther Furth

Jose Holebas (Watford/English Premier League): Came on as a substitute for the final four minutes in the 2-0 win over West Ham

Orestis Karnezis (Watford/English Premier League): Selected to matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Andreas Bouchalakis (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): Selected to matchday squad, but remained on the bench

Zeca (FC Copenhagen/Danish SuperLiga): Played the whole match in the 3-0 defeat away to Sonderjyske

Apostolos Vellios (Nottingham Forest/Championship): Not selected to the matchday squad

Giannis Gianniotas (Real Valladolid/Segunda Division): Came on in the 69th minute and provided an assist for his team’s final goal in the 3-1 win over Oviedo

Giannis Maniatis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Replaced an injured teammate in the 19th minute of the  1-0 win over Malatyaspor
