Greens off the mark at last
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 4
|Panathinaikos||1 - 0||Apollon Smyrni|
Panathinaikos finally kick-started their SuperLeague season on Sunday with a well-deserved first win of the campaign after beating Apollon Smyrnis 1-0 at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Israeli forward Omri Altman scored the only goal of the game for the Greens after 32 minutes, but the scoreline flattered the visitors as Panathinaikos should have scored more in this Matchday 4 clash.
It was a much-needed win for under-pressure coach Marinos Ouzounidis, whose team have endured a nightmare start to the season, going out of Europe as well as having a poor domestic start.
The victory moves the Trifili up to 11th place, and they will be expected to push on from here.
This time Ouzoundis’ players looked in much better shape than they have done in recent matches, with Altman and Swedish forward Oscar Hiljemark proving a constant danger to the visitors.
And it was that combination which won the match in the end, with Altman rising highest to head home a corner from his teammate.
Both players had chance to extend the lead, but one goal proved enough with Apostolos Mantzios’ Apollon ineffective in attack.
The visitors did have one good chance to score, but Panathinaikos goalkeeper Odisseas Vlachodimos thwarted Polish midfielder Bartłomiej Babiarz when the Apollon man was through one-on-one.
