Honours even as AEL and Tripolis get off the mark
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 2
|Larissa||1 - 1||Asteras Tripolis|
|Nazlidis 71'||Mazza (P) 59'|
AEL and Asteras Tripolis secured their first points of the new SuperLeague season on Monday night after the two teams played out a closely-contested 1-1 draw in their Matchday 2 clash in Larissa.
Having started the season with a defeat apiece last weekend, both sides were desperate to kick-start their campaign with a win at the AEL FC Arena.
And although the home side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first half, it was the visitors who took the lead a minute before the hour mark from the penalty spot, Argentine forward Pablo Mazza slotting home after Nikola Zizic was penalized for a handball.
Andre Paus’ AEL side responded positively, however, and got themselves back on level terms through captain Thomas Nazlidis, who converted Emanuel Perrone’s pass in the 71st minute, just a few minutes after the skipper failed to score from a Vasilis Rentzas cross.
Argentine midfielder Perrone should then have made it 2-1 to AEL just three minutes later but he flashed a shot wide when well positioned and the chance went begging.
Next it was the visitors’ turn to go agonizingly close to a winner with five minutes left when Mazza raced clean through on goal but AEL goalkeeper Mladen Božović rescued the home side with a fine save.
