Honours even between Panionios and Atromitos in Nea Smyrni
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 25
|Panionios||2 - 2||Atromitos|
Panionios halted Atromitos’ bid to break into the top three by holding the Peristeri club to a 2-2 draw in Nea Smyrni on Saturday, while earlier in the day 10-man Kerkyra salvaged a point from a goalless draw at Larissa.
Michalis Grigoriou’s Panionios team, who have been inconsistent of late and depleted due to injuries and suspensions, were the better side against Damir Canadi’s exciting Atromitos outfit for the most part of this tight matchday 25 encounter and came agonisingly close to taking all three points.
The draw helped Panionios move up one place from sixth to fifth with 33 points, while Atromitos remain fourth with 47 points.
After a low-key first half, the home side broke the deadlock three minutes into the second period. Midfielder Kyriakos Savvidis won possession high up the pitch and fed Srdan Spiridonovic, who produced a clinical side-footed finish.
Atromitos responded immediately and Panionios goalkeeper Matic Kotnik produced a double save after 53 minutes, punching away a cross from Dimitris Giannoulis an then blocking a header from Amr Warda.
The visitors threatened again two minutes later when Warda flicked on for Abiola Dauda, but the Nigerian fired over the bar when he should really have done better.
Atromitos were made to rue those missed chances four minutes later when Panionios went 2-0 thanks to Spiridonovic, who produced a neat finish from Valentino Vlachos’ cross.
The refused to give up the ghost, however, and there were back in the match in the 65th minute when Konstantinos Kotsopoulos headed home a corner.
Atromitos piled on late pressure and finally grabbed the equaliser in the third minute of added time, Warda the man on target to salvage the point for Canadi’s men.
|Larissa||0 - 0||Kerkyra|
In Larissa, the home enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but it was the struggling visitors who came closest to scoring when winger Denis Epstein hit the woodwork after 65 minutes.
Three minutes later Kerkyra’s hopes of getting a win were dimished when Spyros Spinoulas was dismissed after picking up a second booking, but the Islanders held on to claim a crucial point in their battle to avoid the drop.
The result sees 14th-placed Kerkyra move one point clear of Apollon Smyrnis, who occupy the second relegation spot in 15th and face a trip to PAS Giannina on Monday. Larissa are two places above and six points better off in 12th spot.
