How AEK can advance to the Europa League knockout stages
AEK need one of two results against Austria Wien on Thursday to advance to the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League.
AEK travel to Vienna on Thursday for the their final UEFA Europe League Group D clash against Austria Wien. The much anticipated match is one of the most important games in recent history for AEK as a ticket to the knockout stages of the competition is at stake.
AEK currently claim second in Group D with seven points, trailing leaders AC Milan (11 points) while sitting ahead of Austria Wien (4 points) and Rijeka (4 points). AEK will simply need a win or a draw on Thursday to secure a place in the Last 32 of the UEFA Europa League and will enter Friday’s draw as an unseeded team. AC Milan have mathematically secured top spot in the group and will be seeded in the next round’s draw.
If AEK were to lose to Austria Wien , then the Austrian side will claim second spot and march on to the next round. An Austria Wien win would put them tied with AEK on seven points, however, Austria Wien would hold the better head-to-head record (draw in Athens, win in Vienna), giving them second spot.
In the scenario that Austria Wien defeat AEK and Rijeka defeat Milan, then AEK, Rijeka, and Austria Wien will be tied on seven points. In this case, Austria Wien will once again advance to the next round as they hold the best head-to-head record over their other two opponents.
For AEK it is simple, a win or draw and the Kitrinomavri are through to the Europa League’s Last 32.
