Panionios lost ground on their title rivals on Sunday after a double from Erik Jendrišek earned Xanthi a 2-0 home win over the Nea Smyrni club in a tense Matchday 11 encounter which saw the visitors end the match with 10 players.
Jendrišek struck in the 23rd and 65th minutes at the Xanthi FC Arena to claim the three points, while a frustrated Panionios produced a below-par display and had defender Evangelos Ikonomou sent off six minutes from full-time.
The Greek central defender elbowed Xanthi’s Spanish defender Jorge Casado and was sent for an early bath for his troubles.
The win was Xanthi’s second in succession and Milan Rastavac’s side leapfrogged Panionios into fifth place as a result, while Michalis Grigoriou’s Panthers are sixth.
