Karaiskakis Stadium Amongst World’s Most Intimidating

Website 90min.com recently came out with its list of the world’s most intimidating football stadiums. Amongst the list was Olympiacos’ home ground, the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, which came in 12th on the site’s list.

The list was not based on any statistical evidence and the stadiums were not picked because of size or necessarily importance of club or league. The Karaiskakis fit the criteria of 12 stadiums “that strike fear into the heart of any visitors, helping the home side win the game before a ball has even been kicked.”

Specifically, the Karaiskakis was covered in the following manner by the site:

“When a stadium is named after a field marshal who was mortally wounded during the Greek war of independence, it's safe to say that there will be some acts of violence in the stands. Only capable of housing around 32,000 Olympiacos supporters, the Karaiskakis Stadium makes up for it in sheer hostilities, noise and unorthodox fan sequences.”

Surely, there will be debate on whether other Greek stadiums could have made a list like this. It’s just another example that Greek football maintains its reputation as having some of the most fanatical support in European and world football.

The 12 Stadiums selected were as follows:

1. Turk Telekom Arena (Turkey)
2. Sheriff Stadium (Moldova)
3. Anfield (England)
4. Stadio San Paolo (Italy)
5. Lokomotivi Stadium (Georgia)
6. La Bombonera (Argentina)
7. The Den (England)
8. Estadio Sao Januario (Brazil)
9. Red Star Stadium (Serbia)
10. Mestalla (Spain)
11. Signal Iduna Park (Germany)
12. Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium (Greece)
